Against violence against women: demonstrations held in dozens of cities this Saturday

Across the country, the association called for demonstrations against the violence and impunity of the attackers. They demanded the implementation of a comprehensive legal framework against violence and a budget of 3 billion euros to implement it.

Demonstrations are being held this Saturday, November 22 in Paris and in dozens of cities in France at the call of feminist associations urging the State to “revolutionize” the policy of eradicating violence against women. In the capital, the procession will depart from the Place de la République at 2 p.m. to join the Nation. Demonstrations or other meetings are planned in Lille, Lyon, Rennes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux in particular.

“The violence and impunity of the attackers still occurs eight years after the election of Emmanuel Macron,” denounced the collective “Feminist Strike”, which unites around sixty associations, trade unions and federations committed to the issue of women’s rights. “Often victims are not believed, complaints are closed without follow-up. »

Regarding gender-based violence and sexual violence, “it happens everywhere, and at all times: in living rooms, at work and study, in public spaces, in transport, in health facilities, in gynecological practices, in maternity wards, in supply chain workshops of multinational companies, in police stations…”.

“What we need is a real revolution”

The associations demand the implementation of a comprehensive legal framework against violence, a budget of 3 billion euros to implement it, the effectiveness of educational sessions on emotional life, relationships and sexuality (Evars) or even an end to funding reductions for associations supporting victims.

“What is needed is a real revolution, both in terms of prevention, support and legal processes for victims of sexual violence,” said Floriane Volt of the Women’s Foundation on Wednesday during a press conference.

Mobilization is also planned for Tuesday

Mobilization is also planned for Tuesday, November 25, on the occasion of the international day against violence against women.

According to the latest official figures published on Thursday by the Inter-Ministerial Mission for the Protection of Women (Miprof), the number of murders of women within marriage increased by 11% between 2023 and 2024 with 107 women killed by their partners or former partners. The Nous Tous Collective for its part calculated that, on Friday 21 November, there had been 149 murders of women since the beginning of the year.

A woman is a victim every two minutes of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault and every 23 seconds of sexual harassment, sexual exhibition or sending of unsolicited sexual content, according to Miprof. The low rate of prosecutions of perpetrators of violence in France was deemed “very worrying” in September by the European Council, which called on Paris to take “urgent action”.
