The intervention of the Vaucluse gendarmerie undoubtedly averted the tragedy. Friday, November 21, an 82-year-old man and his son went mushroom picking near the Saint-Ariès hill. However, the man never returned to the meeting place as agreed.

“Without a telephone and alone on the Saint-Ariès hill, as night fell, the situation quickly became very worrying,” said the gendarmerie who deployed a large device, at around 6 p.m., to find him. Steep terrain, dark nights, winds blowing more than 70 km/h, and temperatures approaching 0°C endanger the lives of missing people, added the press release published on Facebook.

Man found “disorientated, in mild hypothermia, with scratches”

It was the EOS dog that managed to find traces of the eighty year old man. Leaving the vehicle, the animal first found the man’s basket 3km further, then “several traces of blood”, allowing police to narrow the search area.

“At 10 p.m., the man was finally found on the trail, disoriented, in a state of mild hypothermia, with scratches on his hands, feet and head,” the police said, praising the dog’s “extraordinary talents.” The man was treated by emergency services.
