That man died in prison nineteen years ago. The coup that brought him to power occurred in 1973. However, the shadow of Augusto Pinochet still looms over the presidential elections being held today in Chile. Two of the three candidates dominating the polls have made no secret of their admiration for the former general turned dictator.

The founder of the Republican Party, right-wing lawyer José Antonio Kast, is considered to have a 23% intent to vote. The leader of the National Libertarian Party, 49-year-old lawmaker Johannes Kaiser reached 15%. Both are nostalgic for Pinochet, who promised to review the beliefs of former supporters of the dictator, supporting communist Jeannette Jara, a representative of the left-wing coalition currently in power.
