Appointment granted. The Euro 2028 final, hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, will take place at Wembley Stadium in London in front of 90,000 people on July 9 2028, UEFA announced on Wednesday.
“An unforgettable football celebration awaits,” we can read in the official account of the home usually occupied by The Three Lions, the England national team. The opening match will take place in Cardiff on June 9 2028.
A total of 51 matches are planned for this tournament, which will bring together 24 teams divided into six groups, as has been the case since the 2016 edition in France. The first two teams from each of the six groups will advance to the round of 16 along with the four best third-placed teams.
Euro 2021 remake
Nine stadiums in eight cities (Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, London) will host Euro 2028 matches.
“Eight of the nine host stadiums, except Wembley, will host last-16 matches, with the four quarter-finals split between the hosts: Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow and Wembley. To ensure sporting fairness and equal treatment, the last-16 winners will play their quarter-finals at different venues,” UEFA said.
Just like Euro 2021 (postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 crisis), the final week will take place entirely at Wembley, London, with two semi-finals on Tuesday 4 July and Wednesday 5 July, and the final on Sunday 9 July.
