The government has decided to challenge the regional law on assisted suicide approved by Sardinia in September before the Constitutional Court, arguing that the issue falls under national and not regional authority. This rule will remain in effect while the Court considers the case. The decision primarily has political value: the center-right parties in the government oppose the practice and oppose the regional initiative, which also emerged because Parliament has not yet approved a national law despite a decision in 2019. So far only Sardinia and Tuscany have passed their own regulations, both of which the government opposes.
