At nearly 30°C in November in Béarn, the heat record was broken in the region

The November heat record was broken in Béarn on Wednesday, a day marked by very cool temperatures across almost the entire region, Météo France told AFP. This record was recorded in Aïcirits-Camou-Suhast (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), with a temperature of 29.5°C, beating the 28.3°C on 23 November 2014 at this station.

“A depression called Claudia centered in the Atlantic brings warm air from Spain. This causes the mercury to rise well above normal temperatures,” explained Météo France on its website.

In the Southwest, the heat is exacerbated by “the Foehn effect, a mechanism that heats air masses at the foot of the relief”, in this case at the base of the slopes of the Pyrenees in France, added Météo France. This largely explains the temperature of 29.3°C in Oloron (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) or 28.1°C in Adast (Hautes-Pyrénées).

“Similar mild episodes have occurred in the past,” the National Meteorological Institute recalled. He cited a precedent in 2015, at the beginning of the month, on November 8, when the temperature rose to 28.1°C in Dax (Landes).

Record at 31.4°C

The highest temperature in mainland France in November was recorded in Solenzara, in South Corsica, with 31.4°C on November 10, 1985. “Such temperatures in November are becoming more frequent due to climate change,” Météo France underlined.

The rise in temperature due to greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity is even faster in France than the world average.

This November’s peak of cooler temperatures exceeded last month’s: temperatures of 25°C occurred in the Southwest and near the Mediterranean between Monday 20th and Wednesday 22nd. Less than 10% of the region was affected by negative temperatures in October 2025, which is one of the lowest proportions since measurements began in 1947.

In September, on Friday the 19th, peak heat causes thermometer temperatures to rise above 36°C in the Hautes-Pyrénées and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
