A dream final, a final that caps off a season marked by two world number ones (both must be at the same time): Carlos Alcaraz clear defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime with scores 6-2, 6-4 after one hour and 22 minutes of play and on Sunday at 6 pm Jannik Sinner will face the Spaniard. Which of the two will lift the trophy ATP Finals we’ll find out in a few hours but the number one in the world was definitely scary: the first set dominated, Carlos was unplayable, the second was more even but the end was written, Alcaraz came out on top.
Words in Spanish
“I am very happy with today’s match, I appeared solid and focused without leaving any space for the opponent. I am very happy because I have to play a great match tomorrow.” said Alcaraz at the end of the race. When asked if this would be the sixth game against Sinner this season, the Spaniard replied: “I’m happy to play another great match against Jannik on this court, I will be very focused. I know the fans will support it but I will think about the things I have to do to be able to play the best tennis. See you tomorrow”, he concluded while greeting the audience.
Alcaraz’s victory
In first set The balance only held in the first two games, 1-1, then Alcaraz scored and took a break after taking the lead on his serve turn. One great point made the score 3-1. But in the next game, there was a reaction from Auger-Aliassime who was 30-40 up and had a great chance to regain the lost points on serve but Carlos came alive in the crunch time, leaving only crumbs and going 4-1 up. The Canadian held the half scoreless (4-2) but it was not enough, the Spaniard went 5-2 up and then also dominated the sixth game which gave him the lead. 6-2 smooth after 37 minutes.
In second set there was more balance, at least at the start: 2-2 in the first four games without a break, Alcaraz sometimes played with a condescending attitude, giving up easy points but then, as in the fifth game, he escaped with a fantastic backhand to get 3-2. Meanwhile, Auger-Aliassime made fewer mistakes and played more smoothly, perhaps with his “I have nothing more to lose” mode on, the 3-3 came without too much effort. The seventh game was level at 30-30 but with a serve at 210 km/h Alcaraz led 4-3: Felix didn’t give up, he was very solid on serve with the first serve and made it 4-4. The two protagonists continued to dominate with serve, Carlos going 40-0 up and then 5-4.
There
the pressure was now on Auger-Aliassime who served to stay in the match and lost 0-30, then 15-40 two break points: the first was cancelled, the second missed with a forehand and Alcaraz flew into the final, ended 6-4.
