“A decision has not been made” regarding the location of future ATP Finals. Andrea GaudenziATP president, said this at a press conference, in the heart of the Inalpi Arena in Turin, where ATP Finals. “We haven’t started talking about what will happen in 2027, 2028, 2039 and 2030,” Gaudenzi added, citing infrastructure, fan experience and player space as “criteria that will be evaluated to select the next destination”.
ATP finals still in Turin?
That ATP Finalsof course it arrived in Italy 2030they will be still in Turin? “This is a fantastic edition, in Turin we started with Covid and every year the event progresses. This edition is especially exciting, because we are fighting to be number one.” For the future, Milan remains in the backgroundbut the position is clear and an evaluation is being carried out: “In my opinion – explained Gaudenzi – it is a combination of experience for the players, experience for the fans and also market potential because we want to attract from a foreign point of view, there is the possibility of fans coming from abroad, so it is a combination of several things, there are no criteria, only Turin has shown a lot, has done what it should do, that is not the problem, it is an internal discussion, a process review which one is worth having.”
Gaudenzi: “It is important to invest in infrastructure”
Gaudenzi added: “For me the appeal to the Government is: it’s great if you want to get involved in sport, tennis on the one hand is a huge strength that we have, on the other hand it’s a weakness that requires huge infrastructure investment, because in this sport you have huge facilities that you use a maximum of two or three weeks a year. Roland Garros is amazing, so is Wimbledon and the Australian Open. They’re all multi-billion investments. To put that in perspective, Saudi, the new Masters 1000, there would be an investment of 2 and a half billion, if that investment didn’t come from the government with the economics of the tournament, you can’t justify it. So the government’s priority should be to support the federation for infrastructure if it wants to develop. Without government support, it’s not easy.
Gaudenzi also spoke about the possibility to watch the ATP Finals abroad: “We have a contract with Fitp, if they are able to honor the contract then there is no problem, we have a very good relationship. However, if they are put in a position by the government that cannot honor the contract, then problems could arise. We are not at that point yet, they are working with the government to try to maintain some prerogatives.”
