Barcelona hires Xavi Pascual as coach nine years after his departure | Basketball | Sport

Barcelona have hired Xavi Pascual as their new coach, following Sunday’s dismissal of Joan Peñarroya, according to sources at the club, which has not yet made the deal official. The Gavà coach thus returns to what was his home for 14 seasons, leading the first team in eight of them (2008-2016). Euroleague champion in 2010, four ACB championships, 3 Copas del Rey and 4 Super Cups adorn Pascual’s record, who arrives at Barça in a deep crisis. Barça’s basketball section went two years without winning any titles and this season the results are terrible. With a 2-4 draw in the ACB League (11th, out of positions from playoffs and access to the Copa del Rey), a little better in the Euroleague with a 6-4 (8th place), Xavi Pascual has ahead of him to straighten out the team’s direction.

Pascual was currently without a team, after five seasons at Zenit St. Petersburg (2020-2025) and after two at Panathinaikos (2016-2018). In both Russia and Greece he won the national League and Cup championships.
