Biancofiore, ‘my common sense amendment protects excellence’ – Il Tempo

Rome, 21 November (Adnkronos) – “I consider the attempts of some trade unions in the medical-health sector to involve the majority in the amendments I signed to be clumsy and inappropriate, for which I take responsibility and which I confirm are reasonable in my opinion. I come from a family of 5 doctors including a primary doctor, a general practitioner and an orthopedist, therefore it is in no way my intention to oppose those categories but rather to praise the excellence of this country which constitutes the largest majority in contrast to 4 intelligent people, recklessness that discredits others.” This was stated by Senator Michaela Biancofiore in reply to the statements of Anaao Assomed, Cimo-Fesmed and Fnomceo.

“I invite the protesting trade unions – he added – not to generalize, not to involve an uninformed Government considering that the Executive and the Legislative are two different powers, but on the contrary also try to interpret the frustration of a society that unfortunately remains the victim of a sensational error caused by naive doctors. Another or worse, he was operated on unnecessarily, what should we respond? How can the trade unions justify this? Should they give a reasonable response: is it the responsibility of the hospital where the tragic error occurred? I say this because, my amendment not only defends medical excellence but also facilities that are increasingly under attack to the detriment of all health workers, without much blame.”

“In every sector, despite the perfect professionalism (of the majority), there are bound to be scapegoats. The amendments I have outlined only refer to responsibility for serious and proven negligence, as well as in cases that are borderline and should be borne by the structure. In these circumstances, it is not appropriate to place responsibility solely and exclusively on hospitals or clinics that already have budget problems that are burdening people’s pockets and thus suffer penalties and sometimes severe and irreparable reputational damage. I do not believe that this is wrong thinking but it protects citizens the country in the broadest sense and this is not the result of my findings but is clear from discussions with health care managers, doctors who have largely taken steps to ensure insurance, patients and health care staff Of course if we move from sterile attacks to confrontation – concludes Biancofiore – I am willing to carry out any dialogue with the unions and in any case it is the Parliament that represents the mandate of the citizens, to decide on my proposals which I reiterate are in the interests of doctors and citizens on the basis of equality”.
