In the early presidential elections held today in Republika Srpska, the Serb-majority entity of Bosnia-Herzegovina, a success awaits Sinisa Karan, a loyalist of president Milorad Dodik, a Bosnian Serb nationalist leader who was removed from the presidency in recent months after the confirmation of his conviction.
Based on data provided a few hours after voting closed by the SNSD party, which is the majority political force of Dodik and Karan himself, the party will be ahead with more than 162 thousand votes, compared to the almost 154 thousand votes obtained by Branko Blanusa, his main opponent (there are six candidates in total), a member of the opposition party SDS.
The General Election Commission has announced that it will release the first preliminary data in the evening, around 23:00. Participation levels in the consultations – which did not include a second round – were very low, around 40%, a significant decrease compared to the last elections in 2022 in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
