The era of women’s handball is over: Buxtehuder SV has split from its long-time coach Dirk Leun. The club started the season poorly.

Bundesliga handball team Buxtehuder SV has immediately parted ways with its coach Dirk Leun. The longest-serving coach in the women’s Bundesliga will no longer be in charge of the team, the club announced on Monday.

The Buxtehuder women’s team is in second to last place in the standings with 2:14 in points and has not been able to record a win this season. After just two draws in seven games, a 21:30 defeat against Zwickau a week ago ended the partnership.

Peter Prior, BSV manager, paid tribute to the outgoing coach’s achievements: “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dirk Leun. His name represents a very successful era with a Challenge Cup win in 2010, cup wins in 2015 and 2017 as well as three German runner-up championships. Not forgetting his commitment to Buxtehude’s youth and youth sectors.”

Both parties agreed not to reveal the exact reason for the separation. However, Prior explained: “Of course, it’s not just the coaches who are responsible for this. But recently, everyone involved has become increasingly doubtful whether we can change this trend together.”

Last year was already disappointing for BSV. The club will play their next match after the five-week World Cup break against HSG Bensheim/Auerbach.
