Public transportation revolution?Cable car in Herne? City plans a project of 33 million euros
from Martin Breunig
The city of Herne plans to build a cable car. The gondola will be connected to direct train and bus connections at the main station. But not everyone likes this idea.
The cable car is estimated to cost 33 million euros
The main train station at Wanne-Eickel will be the starting point of the new cable car. The path then leads about 1,000 meters across the railroad tracks. There is currently nothing at the destination station, but the company is expected to settle there soon. This is how Mayor Frank Dudda (SPD) introduced himself. Construction costs are estimated at 33 million euros. Unlike the world-famous cable cars in Bolivia, the Zugspitze or in Rio de Janeiro, the planned cable car in Herne is not intended to be a tourist attraction. Everything will be connected by public transportation and will also be used with Deutschlandticket. The Rhein Ruhr Transport Association is involved in this project.
The federal government covered some of the construction costs
The federal government will cover 75 percent of construction costs of 33 million euros, with the state covering another 20 percent. However, it is not only the construction that requires money, the maintenance of the cable car must also be borne by the city government. According to media reports, they currently have debts of 120 million euros. That is why only a few residents view the project positively.
The plan is to start construction in 2030
It is not yet clear whether the cable car will actually come. There are already plans in several cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. However, this was prevented because residents complained. The planned start of construction at Wanne Eickel is 2030. There are still many things that can happen before that.
