After all, it’s natural, the enemy of your enemy is your friend. This saying is enough to explain the surprising understanding between Ignazio Marino and Virginia Raggi, two of Roberto Gualtieri’s predecessors, or rather common enemies. The Martian has been around for a few months, he announced just in time for summer, he really missed the Capitol. Now that he’s back on the horse, with an MEP seat, why not try again? The other city, the first to take over, is still unfinished, far from Giuseppe Conte’s narrow circle, but still officially within the M5S. In short, he is also looking for new sensations.

The triggering cause of this odd couple is simply a waste-to-energy factory, a ghost in the process of creation for which there is only one person responsible: Roberto Gualtieri. A story that comes from afar: in July 2022 the M5S leader caused the fall of Mario Draghi’s government, also because of the green light given by the former ECB governor to the factory in Rome.

The newly formed partnership met yesterday in Rome to review “Golpe Capitale” after 10 years, a documentary that chronicles the former surgeon’s years in the Capitol, his progressive distance from the Democratic Party, the signatures collected by a notary for his resignation by the then regent: Matteo Orfini. Marino himself said it today on his social media: “Why doesn’t the PD hold a primary election to choose the next candidate for mayor of Rome?’ These are the questions I was asked in that room.”

The answer came soon after: “On the other hand, if center-left primaries are held to identify candidates for President of our nation’s House, why not use the same formula to choose who runs to lead our cities?”. So he cares, of course he cares.

Even more straightforward in the final reason: “How can I campaign for Roberto Gualtieri’s encore?”.

Virginia Raggi herself answered it: “Neither of us could ever support an election campaign in which we would have to oppose everything we have tried to do and what we think.” In practice we don’t even talk about it. The Martian then, at the end of the event, made two calculations: “When I ran again, I got 12% and Virginia 20%, combined it was more than 30%”.

Moral: get ready, from the Roberto Gualtieri series, don’t sleep too much. Hours later it became clear that the “reunion” had caused concern. It was the Secretary of the Democratic Party of Rome, Enzo Foschi, who spoke: “In Rome we don’t need political games: we need to look forward, not back ten years. With Gualtieri we want to continue developing projects for the city and build a political and social coalition based on the proposals. The Democratic Party is moving forward with Gualtieri for the next elections.” In short, the odd couple is ready for a dress rehearsal.
