Milan, November 22 (Adnkronos Health) – “A woman diagnosed with breast cancer must be treated in the Breast Unit”. Carmen Criscitiello, head of breast oncology at the Humanitas clinical institute in Rozzano (Milan) and professor at Humanitas University, underlined this during the presentation of the docufilm ‘Il Baggago’ in Milan, promoted by MSD Italia in collaboration with Andos, Europa Donna Italia, Fondazione IncontraDonna, Komen Italia and Salute Donna. “We have evidence that patients treated in these specialist centers have better outcomes,” he explained. The reason, he explains, is the presence of a multidisciplinary team consisting of oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, radiotherapists, pathologists, psycho-oncologists and nutritionists, “who are able to jointly evaluate the best treatment path and support the patient in a 360-degree manner”.
Scientific research also plays an important role, recalls the specialist: “Today’s progress is the result of many years of work. But we cannot stop: although important steps forward have been taken, we have not yet reached the point we wanted. It is very important for everyone to understand and share the importance of conducting research.”
Criscitiello underlines the value of participation in clinical trials, both by professionals and patients: “Taking part in clinical trials means being able to access innovative treatments that could become the standard of care in the future. But it also means making an altruistic contribution to other women. Research must continue with everyone’s commitment”, he concluded.
