CDU horrified, federal AfD from a distance: anger over top AfD’s statements on the Holocaust | policy

Berlin – Surprised by Ulrich Siegmund, AfD’s main candidate in Saxony-Anhalt! In an interview on the “Politico” podcast “Berlin Playbook,” the AfD politician would not commit to calling the Holocaust “the worst crime against humanity.”

There he was asked how he viewed the Nazi era from 1933 to 1945. Siegmund described it as “the lowest point in our history.” But when asked whether the worst crimes against humanity occurred during this time, Siegmund replied: “I dare not judge that because I cannot accept humanity as a whole.”

A sentence that causes anger. Josef Schuster, 71, President of the Central Jewish Council, accused Siegmund of “complete shamelessness.” “It is difficult to avoid the impression that Mr Siegmund’s statements reflect a clear sympathy for the National Socialist era,” Schuster told the dpa news agency.

Even that federal party AfD go from a distance. When asked by WELT, a party spokesperson insisted: “The Holocaust was the worst crime against humanity.”

CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann (48) told BILD: “Anyone who downplays the Holocaust is misrepresenting history and fomenting hatred against Jews. Behind this lies a reprehensible connection with the National Socialist ideology, which destroyed Germany at that time and spread terror throughout Europe.”

The AfD is hopeful about its main candidate Ulrich Siegmund to participate in the government in state elections in Saxony-Anhalt next year.
