The terms of the L’Aquila juvenile court ordering the removal of the three children from the “family in the forest” of Palmoli, in the province of Chieti, not only sparked a huge public debate and fierce clashes between the government and the court, but also a series of insults and threats of violence mainly directed at the head of the court, Cecilia Angrisano. A real witch hunt is taking place on social media, complete with addresses, cell phone numbers and emails to track down the judge who signed the order to remove the children from the home where they lived with their parents Nathan and Catherine.
SOLIDARITY
“She is a con…na emerita”, we read in one of the many comments that appeared on Facebook in the last hours. “Juvenile court is a hole full of worms,” another user wrote. And again: «That he had nightmares every night without ever resting, about the heartless decision he made to take children away from loving families and the animals they loved». Accompanying the insults and threats that have increased over time, it is not uncommon for photos of the president to appear. The executive board of the National Association of Judges of L’Aquila intervened in the judge’s defense and expressed “concern” about the “media hate campaign waged against the head of the judiciary, who was subjected to insults and intimidation”. “We remember, once again, that respect for competence and the separation of powers are the cornerstones of a democratic state – ANM concluded – Ges L’Aquila always accompanies judges involved in the protection of citizens”. A story about threats and insults against the president, which may have unavoidable legal consequences. Meanwhile, in a few hours the report from the Prosecutor General of L’Aquila will reach the hands of Justice Minister Carlo Nordio who will decide, after reading it, whether and what action to take. “Removing a child from a family is an act so painful” that “an in-depth investigation needs to be carried out”, said the Minister of Justice two days ago, again commenting on the story of the Palmoli children, a day after discussing with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni the possibility of sending Ministry inspectors to verify the management of the procedure.
APPEAL
The family’s lawyer, Giovanni Angelucci, who goes every day to the family home where the minor children were moved – and where the mother also lives and can only see them at set times – will from today return to work on the papers that will be submitted to the judge for the appeal that will be filed in the next few days. “The first goal – explains the lawyer – is to reunite the family, the second is to bring them back home”. To do this, it is possible that we may decide to fill the gaps arising from court orders. From the field of education – for the judges, the certificates obtained by children following parental instruction are insufficient – for the judges about techniques such as, for example, the installation of bathrooms adjacent to the house – for the judges it is a “destruction” where the “safety and physical integrity of minors” is threatened – where currently only Nathan’s father lives and where the children never stop asking to be able to return.
Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini was also involved in the children’s return and – apart from having spoken to the family’s lawyer several times by telephone – from day one he expressed his solidarity with the family, saying he was also ready to go to Abruzzo. “I will do everything to ensure those three wonderful children return home, to the arms of mom and dad,” the League leader wrote yesterday on social media, defining the rule as a “shameful, dangerous and worrying precedent”.
MOBILITATION
A solidarity – but also criticism, as public opinion was divided on the topic – which turned into online petitions and social comments – which then degenerated into insults and threats against those who decided to remove the three children from their parents – until arriving at the national demonstration to be held next December 6 in Rome, in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Family and Equal Opportunities. It was fellow citizens, friends and family acquaintances who decided to take to the streets to protest the juvenile court’s decision. At the same time, an online petition was launched, its second, to invite those interested to participate in a sit-in in Piazza Santi Apostoli in Rome against “extreme measures that appear to be based on a cultural evaluation of the lifestyle of older people”. “This case – said the organizers – does not only concern one family from the forest, but also concerns all of us.”
