In a black and white photograph taken in 1914 in China in the province of Sichuan during a mission of sinologists and archaeologists Victor Segalen (1878-1919), Jean Lartigue (1886-1940) and Auguste Gilbert de Voisins (1877-1939), we see a strange caravan consisting of several horses loaded with heavy boxes, accompanied on foot by four Chinese people.
The group walked slowly on the peak of Mount Yunding, carrying ink and paper to carry out a field campaign survey conducted by researchers in this region which contains, engraved in the rock, various testimonies of past civilizations. The operation is carried out using the stamping technique, that is, by placing a sheet of wet paper on the stone with the inscription, which is affixed with a stamp soaked in ink, taking care to match the hole and relief.
