When the Rostock Christmas market reopens on Monday, this year the focus will be on regional partners. Many gastronomic companies come directly from the area and present their handmade products and culinary excellence at the market, organizers said.
The biggest Christmas market in Northern Germany
Visitors can enjoy the Christmas season with a variety of programs. In addition to the culinary center and market, what is claimed to be the largest Christmas market in northern Germany also features a Christmas fair, a fairytale forest and a Christmas village at the Brink in downtown Rostock. As well as a number of local and regional companies, many of the 159 participants came from other countries – including Finland, India, France and Poland.
The traditional highlight is the arrival of Santa Claus on the afternoon of opening day. After the official opening by Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger (left), Santa Claus and his fairy tale aunts drove through Rostock city center in a vintage car from the Gehlsdorf Volunteer Fire Department and turned on the Christmas lights, as announced by the organizers. At 5 p.m. Dummerstorf’s approximately 20 meter high coastal cypress trees will be illuminated for the first time.
Wednesday is family day
On the fairytale castle stage, Santa Claus also regularly welcomes the market’s youngest visitors for a “consultation hour” and singing Christmas carols together. On Wednesdays there are discounts for children on various rides, showmen and restaurants on Family Day. The Rostock Christmas Market is open from November 24 to December 22.
