Climate change negotiations in Belem continue with Lula’s return visit
Days before the planned end of the UN climate conference in Belém, Brazil’s head of state Luis Inácio Lula da Silva wants to return to personally participating in negotiations on Wednesday. This two-week conference has entered a decisive phase; on Tuesday, Brazil’s COP president published the first draft of the text of the resolution from some 190 negotiating countries. However, this still contains several contradictory options, so there is still a lot of work for negotiators to do.
Lula gave a speech at the opening of the UN climate conference on Monday a week ago in which he urged decisive steps to be taken in the fight against global warming. Brazil’s COP presidency so far has been widely praised by participants as highly committed and ambitious. The world climate conference is scheduled to end on Friday evening. But in recent years, COP has always been excessive.
