Concordia, one of the firefighters who saved lives died

One of the firefighters who rescued two Korean couples trapped in the belly of an overturned train died prematurely. Costa Concordia after the sinking of Giglio Island January 13, 2012.

Maurizio Falciani, 62 years oldwho was part of the speleo-river team that reached the cabin where the surviving 29 year old couple, died after leaving a hunting trip between Gambassi Terme and Volterra. He told his friends that he didn’t feel well and wanted to go home, a San Casciano Val di Pesa (Florence). On the way back the other hunters, his former partner – Falciani had retired some years ago – looked on his car stuck to a tree and found him lifeless.

The discovery of two surviving couples, in good physical condition, on their honeymoon and maiden voyage, was one of the events that marked the days of the Concordia shipwreck. Firefighters explored the ship, crossing parts that were flooded and other parts that were still dry, in the space of the capsized ship. The two Koreans made noise with objects so they were heard, reached and rescued.
