BELEM (ITALPRESS) – “Global Mutirao”, the final document of the Belem Cop30 promoted by the Brazilian presidency, has been approved. After yesterday’s deadlock over the absence of fossil fuels in the draft, which many saw as a setback, and with work delays also caused by a fire inside the summit venue, nearly 200 countries, except the United States, unanimously voted on the text after two weeks of negotiations. In the approved text there is no reference to fossil fuels, although Europe has called for greater courage to phase them out. The document introduces new space for negotiations for further efforts on emissions with the “Belem Mission towards 1.5°”; The document also proposes a three-fold increase in funding for adaptation by 2035. This document is a compromise text that provides an initial response in a difficult geopolitical context. The “theme” is different. “There are political issues in the world that have changed a lot, even compared to last year, with the framework of positions and balances at the international level having a strong impact on political positions in the field of climate options,” said the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, on the sidelines of the vote in the plenary session.
The European Union has always been the most ambitious – he explained – but can be defined as complacent. We held 20 coordination meetings with positions that were also articulated because we were in different countries and with different political leaders, but in the end we supported what was the final proposal, to which we contributed, and we did it because it maintained the path that had been agreed in the previous COP and therefore maintained its objectives”, he assured.
