COP30 locations in Brazil evacuated due to massive fires now “under control” – Libération

Towards the end of COP 30 in Belém, Brazil, a large fire broke out this Thursday in part of the location where the climate change rally was held. On orders from security officers, people at the location were evacuated. According to Brazil’s Tourism Minister Celso Sabino, disaster has already occurred “control”. There were no injuries, he added.

The fire started in a kiosk near the entrance and emitted thick smoke outside, while security guards tried to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers, and firefighters arrived at the scene.

The smoke then quickly spread inside, sparking panic among security personnel and attendees. According to Oh Globe, some buildings do not have electricity.

Tens of thousands of COP participants are now outside the venue, quietly waiting for news of the fire which is emitting a faint smell of burning plastic into the air.

Almost the entire COP location is set up under a large tent. The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time. Journalist from Release on location emphasized that all people present at the location were immediately evacuated.
