There is still no sign of a ceasefire or peace treaty in Russia’s war of aggression. But if this were to happen, Ukraine’s supporters believe that significant security guarantees would be needed for Kiev.

Ukraine’s supporters in the West want to speed up the development of security guarantees for Ukraine. The head of the Coalition of the Will said this after a virtual meeting, as announced by the federal government in the evening. The heads of state and government agreed with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to “accelerate cooperation with the United States to advance the security guarantee plan.” Lasting peace must be supported by strong and credible security guarantees to deter future aggression.

On Tuesday, among others, representatives of 35 Western supporters, US Secretary of State Rubio, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj discussed the situation. In addition to EU countries such as Germany and France, Ukraine’s support group also includes non-EU countries such as the United Kingdom and Norway. The meeting was chaired by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The heads of state and government also welcomed assurances “that issues that will affect European and NATO interests will be discussed separately and with the full involvement of European partners and NATO allies,” the Federal Government continued. Here, among other things, a quick decision regarding the “full use of frozen Russian state assets” is “critical.”

Allies have announced they want to support the US peace plan with military security guarantees for countries attacked by Russia. The statement added that the leaders reiterated their determination to further increase financial and military support for Ukraine, as well as pressure on Russia and its war machine, as long as Russia refuses to embark on the path to a just and lasting peace.

Any solution must fully involve Ukraine and its sovereignty must be maintained. Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion with Western help since February 2022.
