Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed to protect Jewish life in Germany from increasing hostility and attacks. “We will do everything in our power to consistently fight anti-Semitism in all its new and old faces,” the CDU chief said at the Understanding and Tolerance Prize awards ceremony at the Jewish Museum in Berlin.
Germany will also support Israel, “whose right to exist is still increasingly being questioned on the streets of Germany,” the Chancellor stressed.
At the same time, all levels of society must be clear that the fight against anti-Semitism is the duty of everyone throughout society. “If the Jews living here in Germany today say that they are starting to fear for their homeland, that they are afraid of being expelled again, then we need a clear response of daily solidarity and also civil courage,” Merz said.
This year, the Jewish Museum in Berlin honored former US ambassador to Germany, Amy Gutmann, and Israeli physicist Daniel Zajfman with the Prize for Understanding and Tolerance.
