“We cannot allow public debate to be conditioned by alarmist statements”: Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi refutes leftist claims

“We cannot allow the public debate to be conditioned by alarmist statements: The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, refuted the left’s claims and responded, in large numbers, to false accusations that they are not doing enough in the field of public order. In his speech at the forty-second national assembly of the ANCI, the owner of the Ministry of the Interior challenged the reality of depicting a situation that is not at all an emergency.

“Compared to ten years ago, we recorded an overall decrease in crime of 11% – the minister began – in the first eight months of 2025 there will be a further decrease of 8% compared to the same period in 2024”. Figures that leave no doubt and, in the minister’s words, are “a demonstration that safety is not a slogan but an everyday commitment”.

Daily commitment manifested in a renewed police presence territorially, in prevention and coordination with the mayor. But not only that, the minister emphasized the fact that “the perception of insecurity often grows larger than the crime itself – and therefore – a collective assumption of institutional and political responsibility is required”.

Piantedosi’s submissive response to attacks by Stefano Bonaccini, on five-star leader Giuseppe Conte and Genoa mayor Silvia Salis, have been among the harshest critics of the majority and the government on security issues in recent weeks.

“We cannot allow the public debate to be conditioned by alarmist readings” Piantedosi then concluded his counterattack, with figures that once again prove the government’s work and its commitment to citizens.
