The severe bad weather that caused serious damage on Saturday continues in Liguria, and for today, Sunday 16 November, weather warnings have also been issued in Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Tuscany, where strong storms have begun causing flooding and traffic problems.
In Tuscany there was a strong storm near Carrara overnight: in Lunigiana, the part of the region closest to Liguria, several roads were flooded and motorists were stranded as the water reached the doors of their vehicles. Several manholes burst and spilled water onto the road.
In Liguria, the greatest damage occurred on Saturday: heavy rain and strong winds caused landslides, the collapse of walls, the overturning of trucks and the fall of several containers at the port. The damage was mainly concentrated in the western regions of Genoa, which are close to the airport (where various departing or arriving flights were cancelled), such as Pegli and Prà. In Borzoli, in the northern region of Genoa, the river Fegino overflowed, flooding several underpasses; Landslides occurred in Vesima, rocks and debris fell onto the road, disrupting traffic.
For several hours there was no news from some of the climbers who were in Piani di Praglia, in the Ligurian highlands: in the evening they were rescued and brought home.
On Sunday, Civil Protection had issued an orange alert, the second of three alert levels, in Liguria and Emilia-Romagna, and a less serious alert, yellow, in other parts of Liguria and Emilia-Romagna, as well as in Tuscany and Lombardy.
There are three types of alerts, based on severity: red, orange, and yellow. Yellow warnings are issued when flooding, waste backups, or isolated critical events, such as landslides, are expected; orange if it is believed that a meteorological event could harm humans and that some types of damage, such as landslides, will be more widespread; red if an extreme phenomenon is predicted to occur, such as floods or landslides which are numerous, frequent and larger.
