Davis Cup, Italy with third consecutive win. The United States leads, then Australia: that takes the honours

Italy has done it again. The Italian team, captained by Livorno’s Filippo Volandri, defeated Spain in the final and won their third consecutive Davis Cup. Italy, after the success of 2023 and 2024 (led by Jannik Sinner) triumphed thanks to the success of Berrettini and Cobolli. Thanks to this success, the Italian team achieved four successes in total.

Final story

Italy is still at the top of the tennis world.

The Italian team led by Filippo Volandri won the Davis Cup for the third time in a row, the fourth in total, beating Spain 2–0 in the final, thanks to the success of Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, winning all the Final 8 matches in two matches, without having to use doubles. Without Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, it was Berrettini who put Italy ahead in the final by beating Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-3, 6-4, then in a tense match Cobolli comeback from Jaume Munar in three sets with a score of 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in almost three hours of play, giving Italy its fourth Salad Bowl in history.

How the Davis Cup works

From 1900 to the present the Davis Cup has been played annually. Over time there have only been a few exceptions due to force majeure, when the single issue of 1091 was skipped and then the 1910 and 2020 editions (due to Covid). The longest periods without a Davis Cup were between 1915 and 1918 and between 1940 and 1945 due to the World Wars.
