Debate in state parliament: SSW considers CO2 storage “subject to gas lobby”

The South Schleswig Voters Association (SSW) opposed carbon dioxide cuts and storage in the state parliament in Kiel. Amendments in accordance with the law in Federal Council In a plenary session, MP Sybilla Nitsch described agreeing to this as “bowing to the gas lobby”.

In the same motion, SSW called on black-green state governments to vote against amendments to the Carbon Dioxide Protection Act in the Federal Council. Technology is associated with uncontrolled risks to nature and the environment. Nitsch stressed: “This strengthens fossil fuels and in this case gas thereby preventing the energy transition.”

Additionally, the risk of leakage is acceptable and underestimated. “We’re talking about final storage here,” explained the SSW MP. Even though the Minister of the Environment wanted to express his doubts about the amendment in the protocol statement, the country still wanted to approve it, Nitsch criticized.

What is being voted on in the Federal Council

So far, researchers in Germany have been allowed to capture CO2, store it in rock layers, or reuse it. Reforming the Carbon Dioxide Storage Act would also allow companies to use the process and build pipelines and storage facilities. The Federal Council still has to approve the amendments.

CO2 capture and storage is known in technical parlance as CCS. CCU is when CO2 is captured and reused.
