Rome, November 17 (Adnkronos) – The Supreme Defense Council, which met for more than three hours at the Quirinale under the chairmanship of the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, “on the Middle Eastern Front positively assessed the achievement of the ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages. The anti-Semitism that currently seems to be resurfacing at times”.
The Council underlines that “lasting peace requires a regional and multilateral approach, capable of balancing local forces and international commitments, and must guarantee the disarmament of Hamas. The implementation of the Sharm el-Sheikh peace plan is essential, maintaining respect for the ceasefire on both sides, with the ultimate aim of reaching the conclusion of the Israeli forces’ military occupation of the Gaza Strip and starting reconstruction. In this regard the Palestinian National Authority is a fundamental interlocutor for Italy and the international community”.
Italy is present in humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip and will also do its part in the training of Palestinian police forces, and participate in initiatives of the European Union and the international community. The Council reiterated that “lasting peace in the region is only possible through the recognition and implementation of the ‘two peoples, two states’ solution”.
