Harsh words for the returning DFB refugeesNagelsmann is very clear about Leroy Sané
Leroy Sané makes a surprise return to the national football team. And the winger is under a lot of pressure. The national coach told him he no longer had “countless opportunities” under his leadership.
Julian Nagelsmann tasked returning DFB player Leroy Sané with words of warning. “He knows that there are countless more opportunities to prove himself at national team level, at least under my leadership,” said the national team coach very clearly at the DFB selection meeting in Wolfsburg.
Nagelsmann stressed that he is “not 100 percent” satisfied with Sané’s performances since his move to Galatasaray, adding that the 29-year-old’s nomination was also due to a lack of alternatives on the wing. “If we had six or seven players to choose from in that position, it would be much more difficult for him.” In 15 competitive matches with Türkiye, the former FC Bayern winger scored three goals and three assists.
However, after “very good exchanges” and “completely transparent and open communication”, Sané realized “what it takes. He is a player who can basically do everything. He just has to do everything. And no one can help him but himself.”
Sané has played 70 international matches (14 goals) and is in Luxembourg for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers on Friday (20.45/RTL) and three days later in Leipzig against Slovakia (20.45/ZDF both games are also on the ntv.de live ticker) returns for the first time since June. “In terms of profile, he has everything we need in his position,” said Nagelsmann: “That’s why he has a chance now. His quota and performances have improved significantly compared to before, both in the Süper Lig and in the Champions League. But he still has steps to take to make things even better – here and at the club.”
After moving from Munich to Istanbul, Nagelsmann had found clear words. He said at the end of the summer that he expected “no miracles from Sané, but a certain quota.”
