Chief Chancellor Thorsten Frei is irritated by new US proposals to end the war in Ukraine. Germany previously knew nothing about the alleged secret negotiations, Foreign Minister Johann Wadepuhl said.
“It seems like Putin was able to achieve war goals that he did not achieve on the battlefield. And that is of course an unacceptable result,” Frei said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Germany didn’t know until the new plan came out
According to Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU), Germany was not aware of any alleged secret talks between the United States and Russia. Germany was “not briefed” on the 28-point plan reported in US media, Wadephul said.
He referred to “the ongoing efforts of all international partners to finally ensure that President Putin is present at the negotiating table,” Wadephul said.
Wadephul: Germany will continue to support Ukraine
This is also how he understands the “joint meeting” currently taking place in Istanbul “and everything that is heading in this direction,” Wadephul added and emphasized: “Of course we support that.”
However, Germany concentrated on “supporting Ukraine”. By doing this, the federal government wants to explain to Putin “directly” that “there is no other alternative to the negotiation process.” The minister stressed that Germany will “stand permanently on the side of Ukraine militarily, politically and economically.”
