The President of the United States will not wait until they are overruled by the courts to remove them. Donald Trump, under pressure to lower the cost of living in his country, signed a decree to remove his own import duties on coffee, exotic fruit and cuts of beef, Friday 14 November.
After having “received additional information and recommendations from various officials”Donald Trump claimed in his decision “determines that certain agricultural products may not be subject to reciprocal import duties” came into force in April, without explaining further this umpteenth change. The list includes products that cannot be grown in the United States, or in quantities that are too small compared to what is needed, such as coffee, tea, bananas and other exotic fruits, or even pine nuts. The decision also excludes cuts of beef from taxable products, at a time when the price of such meat is at a record high in the country.
In April, the American president imposed so-called “reciprocal” import duties, at least 10%, on most products entering the United States. But since major setbacks in local elections, the majority of Republicans have made the cost of living question their top priority.
