Close the doors – and heating costs go down!? The heating season is in full swing – and the big question arises: open or closed doors?
Two opinions
Some say: Open doors ensure warm air circulates better throughout the apartment – ideal for even heating anywhere. Another caveat: If you leave the door open, you’ll lose heat — especially in rooms with different temperatures. And this increases heating costs. What’s true? This question has already been asked BOOK MY HOME (also owned by Axel Springer).
Heating chamber at different temperatures
Hard Federal Environmental Agency The following applies: Living rooms, work spaces and children’s rooms should be around 20 degrees during the day. In the bathroom it can be even more – it protects against mold. On the other hand, temperatures can remain cool in the kitchen, bedroom, or hallway; You don’t usually spend long there.
Herein lies the problem: When warm air moves from a heated room to a cooler room, the temperatures mix. This not only lowers comfortable temperatures – it also wastes energy.
Close the door – it saves money
According to one Campaign by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection You can save up to five per cent on heating costs – just by closing the door to a cooler room. This also includes an attic, basement or cool bedroom.
The only exception: All rooms have the same temperature? Then the door can stay open. In all other cases, it is better to close.
Danger of mold from open doors
Anyone who thinks a cool room will automatically be warm if the door is open is wrong. In fact, it can actually be dangerous. Warm air absorbs more moisture – if it enters a cold room, moisture can settle on the walls.
The result: more humidity, almost no additional heat – and in the worst cases even mold.
Closing the door is worth it – for your health and your wallet.
