United Kingdom – It doesn’t always work on the first try, but here even the 128th repetition was useless: A British learner driver tried 128 times to pass the theoretical driving test – and failed 128 times.
This was reported by “AA Driving School”, a British driving school association, citing official statistics. Therefore, the unlucky person spent a total of around 3,000 pounds (3,395 euros) just on the theory test. In the UK, you pay 23 pounds for a theory exam. According to AA, another unlucky crow took 74 attempts to complete this one – cost point: 1700 pounds (1924 euros).
How the theory test works
In the UK, similar to Germany, the theoretical part is divided into two parts: In the first part, candidates have to answer 50 multiple choice questions about road rules. In the second part they have to watch the dangers in the video Highway traffic recognize.
The theory exam in England is similar to the exam in Germany
There were also some outliers in the practice tests: two people had to retake the test 37 times. The third candidate even needed 43 tries. Therefore, he was allowed to pay around 3,200 pounds (3,621 euros).
Driving lessons in Germany are much more expensive
All this does not include the cost per hour of driving, which varies depending on the region of the UK. Hard “Royal Automobile Club”, one of the largest car associations, the average price in 2024 will be 37 pounds per hour – the equivalent of 41 euros.
In Germany it becomes more expensive: according to ADAC, a 45-minute drive costs on average between 55 and 77 euros. Total cost for one driver’s license Class B costs between 2466 and 4476 euros. However, the Ministry of Transportation presented its plans that October A driver’s license is cheaper and the test is shorter should be done.
How many tries is normal?
Richard Goebelt, head of the Vehicles & Mobility department at TÜV, told BILD: “By 2024, 39 percent of theory tests and almost every third practical test (31 percent) will be a repeat attempt.”
What is surprising is that 56 percent of repeated theory experiments failed again. Only 38 percent failed their first attempt. After the third attempt, 91 percent were successful – and after the fifth attempt it was even 98 percent.
“In principle, failure of more than three attempts is an exception in Germany,” Goebelt said.
These fees are incurred for driving permits
If you want to get a driver’s license in Germany, you will have to pay as follows:
- Application to the driver’s license authority in the county, city or county
- Passport photos, first aid courses, eye tests, teaching material costs
- Theory lessons usually last for 14 double hours
- Practical basic training: minimum 12 special trips plus trial trips
- Practical basic training: further practice hours as needed
- Presentation of theory and practical tests by the respective driving schools
- Cost of testing at TÜV or DEKRA
