Near the German border
Soldiers shoot down a drone over a military airfield in the Netherlands
Drone sightings in European airspace continue. The weapons are now used to defend against missiles at air force bases in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, soldiers from the Volkel air base used weapons against drones flying overhead. The Ministry of Defense in The Hague announced this on Saturday. The incident at the airfield not far from the city of Nijmegen near the German border occurred on Friday evening, he said. The missiles then disappeared and were not seen again, he said. The ministry did not want to say how the drones were discovered and what weapons specifically were used against them “for security reasons.”
A spokesman for the Dutch gendarmerie, which is responsible for border protection, told the ANP news agency that the drone had been “shot down”. The incident is now being investigated with the police.
Drone incidents in Europe are increasing
There have been repeated drone incidents in European airspace for months. Germany was also affected, including Munich airport. To prevent espionage, sabotage and possible attacks on humans, the future Bundeswehr must provide support in domestic drone defense – if necessary with armed forces. This is stipulated in the draft of the Federal Ministry of Interior, which was recently approved by the cabinet.
