An Eintracht Frankfurt fan who suffered a serious injury during an away match in Cologne is now improving, according to the club. As announced by a spokesman for the Bundesliga club, the man fell on the stairs without any external influence and hit his head.
Apart from the medical emergency, the incident at the Frankfurt fan block also attracted attention. After Eintracht’s 4-3 away win – Cologne’s first since 2017 – a fire broke out in the away area. Eintracht Frankfurt announced that it was a blazing banner. Shortly after the final whistle, flames could be seen in the lower row and dark smoke billowed throughout the stadium.
Supporters of both clubs have set off fireworks several times during the match. Firecrackers and fireworks were also thrown from the Frankfurt block inland. Referee Florian Badstübner stopped play in the second half.
Game day was accompanied by nationwide fan protests. The background is a plan for security measures in the stadium area. In many stadiums, including Köln, fans stop supporting within the first twelve minutes of the match.
