Eleven communities are on alert for snowfall, waves and/or wind and, in the case of Catalonia and the Valencian Community, the intensity of the expected strong gusts, up to 100 kilometers per hour, keeps these territories at an orange alert level due to significant risk.
They are at yellow alert level (risk for some activities) due to the forecast of snowfall in Aragon, Castile and León, Navarra (in addition to rain) and also in Catalonia, which is also on alert for storm surges and wind, although in this case at orange level.
In addition to these communities, the following communities are also on weather alert due to maritime storms at yellow level: Andalusia, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Galicia, Cantabria and the Basque Country – these two are also on alert due to rain – and the Valencian Community, also on alert due to winds (at level orange).
According to the forecasts of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) on its website, gusts of 100 kilometers per hour could be reached today on the southern coast of Tarragona and on the southern pre-coast of the province.
Likewise, these wind levels will reach the northern interior of Castellón and up to 90 kilometers per hour on the northern coast of this province. Instead, it will snow with thicknesses greater than 10 centimeters in areas such as the Pyrenees of Huesca and Navarra and in the Val d’Aran (Lleida) starting from 900 metres, with a greater possibility at the end of the day.
Snow accumulations will exceed 5 centimeters in the Cantabrian mountain range between 1,200 and 1,300 meters on the slopes of León, Palencia or Burgos. There will also be intense rain with accumulations of over 40 liters per square meter in twelve hours on the Cantabrian side of Navarra and on the coast of Gipuzkoa.
More than 15 liters per square meter will be collected in one hour on the Basque coast and the Cantabrian coast. However, the areas of Almería and the coast of Granada, the Balearic Islands, the Cantabrian and Basque coasts, the north-west of A Coruña and A Mariña in Lugo, the Asturian coast, the areas of Catalonia and the coast of Castellón are on yellow alert, albeit due to maritime storms. In some parts of the Cantabrian Sea and Galicia the waves will reach a height of between 4 and 5 metres.
