Germany’s nuclear phase-out by April 2023 was a mistake, says Michael Kretschmer. This “green ideology” is causing disillusionment with politics, the Saxony Prime Minister said and did not rule out purchasing fuel from Russia.

Saxony Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer called for lower electricity prices and supported the return of nuclear power in Germany. “We have missed the opportunity to supply a large part of Germany’s energy supply in a CO2-free manner at reasonable prices,” he told the Funke media group newspaper. “This is an acceleration for the AfD and a major contribution to the disillusionment with politics – which is coming out of green ideology.” Fuel rods are no excuse, according to the CDU vice president: “A number of EU countries still get them from Russia,” said Kretschmer.

“We are not yet at the point where we have to decide whether to build new nuclear power plants,” said the Saxony Prime Minister. “It is clear that electricity is not a scarce and expensive commodity.” Kretschmer pointed to neighboring Poland, which is developing nuclear power. “We blew up the last cooling tower. It was really sad.”

Poland wants to start building its first nuclear power plant in 2028. The first reactor block of the planned nuclear power plant in Slajszewo, northwest of Gdansk, is scheduled to start operating in 2036. The new nuclear power plant will be built about 250 kilometers from the German border. The Polish government wants to complete all construction projects near the Baltic Sea by 2038.
