F1, Las Vegas GP: Norris and Piastri’s McLaren disqualified, Verstappen fully relaunched in title race

This could be a major turning point in the F1 title race. The FIA (International Automotive Federation) has just announced the disqualification of two McLarens, namely Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who finished second and fourth respectively in the Las Vegas Grand Prix which was won by Max Verstappen (Red Bull) on Saturday to Sunday night.

The cause: excessive wear on their single-seater floor, the thickness of which was less than the required limit of 9 mm, as analyzed during the technical inspection carried out at the end of the race.

According to F1 regulations, this offense is punishable by disqualification, as happened to Lewis Hamilton during the Chinese Grand Prix in March. This was a technical error, a wooden plank located under the car was used to control contact with the track.

Verstappen’s operation was (very) good

Therefore, this decision relaunched the Championship completely. With just two Grands Prix remaining on the program for the 2025 season – in Qatar on November 30 and in Abu Dhabi on December 7 – Lando Norris moved closer to the world title with a second podium finish in Las Vegas.

With this disqualification, the British McLaren driver is only 24 points ahead of teammates Piastri and Verstappen in the drivers’ standings, instead of the initial 30 and 42 points. Today’s winner performed very well here since his return to draw with Piastri, is still second thanks to a greater number of wins this season (7 for the Australian against 6 for the Dutchman), and seems to be launching towards a great comeback.

This was enough to revive interest at the end of the season, with a maximum total of 58 points to be collected between Qatar, where a sprint race is planned on the program in addition to the Grand Prix, and Abu Dhabi.
