Faced with rising prices in the United States, Donald Trump is losing voters

The American President, under pressure from inflation, announced new measures for purchasing power. But he seems to have lost momentum in his own camp.

Bananas, coffee and beef are finally exempt from import duties in the United States. Donald Trump, under pressure to lower the cost of living for Americans, on Friday November 14 canceled tariffs he himself had imposed on everyday products. Therefore, the executive seems to realize that their protectionist policies, which they have always praised, are casting too wide a net.

The American president also recently said he wants to pay $2,000 to all Americans, except the richest. And for good reason: Americans’ dissatisfaction with purchasing power is hurting them badly in the polls. American consumers are no longer hiding their dissatisfaction with the Trump administration’s economic policies… even on their own.

In Walker County, in northwest Georgia, where Donald Trump won nearly 80% of the vote last year, consumers gritted their teeth. In the parking lot of the “Cost Cutter” discount supermarket, which promises the lowest prices, several pick-up cars were parked. Randy, one of Trump’s voters, does not hesitate to criticize economic policies and inflation. “I think things are getting worse. I’m not saying he will lose support, but it could be a problem if he doesn’t fix it.”he noted.

Here, the American president is already losing out on doubters and independents like Kim, who are struggling to fill his shopping basket. “Everything escalated! It’s terrible, it’s very difficult… We can’t even feed ourselves“, he admitted.

Donald Trump is also starting to lose his influence among young people. Derrick, just 21 years old, works in a tobacco shop. He doesn’t believe the American president can increase his purchasing power.

“I’m leaning towards Trump, but I don’t think he’s going to improve things.”

Too young to vote last year, he said today he was disappointed with Donald Trump: “In fact, when the Democrats were in power, they were too busy undoing everything the Republicans had done. And when a Republican comes in, they just try to undo what the Democrats have established…I feel like there’s no one that can work together to really work for the people.”

In this economic context, many Americans depend on food aid. In a food bank hangar in central Georgia, thousands of cans of food are stacked on high metal shelves.

Cathy, the director, noted that the number of beneficiaries continues to increase. “Each year, we receive updated information on the number of people experiencing food insecurity. This year we saw an increase of 10%, last year it was 25%… This figure has continued to increase since the end of Covid“, he regretted.

In the region, one in six adults and one in four children now depend on aid to eat. Its food bank covers a total of 24 counties, 22 of which voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump last year.
