Federal Environmental Agency: UBA President for the climate protection pioneer alliance

After mixed results World Climate Conference The President of the Federal Environmental Agency (UBA), Dirk Messner, recommended an alliance of ambitious countries. “More than 80 countries have committed to phasing out fossil energy exit strategies in recent days,” Messner told the German Press Agency. “It’s important to build pioneering alliances here,” he said.

“Silver lining”

The results achieved in Belém, Brazil, were “not at all ideal,” Messner stressed, especially because there was no clear statement and no timetable for phasing out coal, oil and gas. “The oil and gas export interests of countries such as Saudi Arabia, Russia and the United States have hindered collective progress on climate. China has also blocked clear statements on phasing out fossil fuels.”

But there is at least a voluntary agreement to discuss the topic further, Messner explained. “That is a silver lining and should not be underestimated. And it is better than no results at all.”

The climate crisis is getting worse

At the same time, the UBA President pointed out how urgent this issue is. «The science is clear: If we do not slow global warming, we will experience extreme weather events such as droughts, hurricanes, floods and heat waves, which will cause human and economic losses. Large ecosystems such as the Greenland ice sheet or the Amazon rainforest system could collapse.
