Feminism will mobilize this 25N with demonstrations throughout Spain | Society

Feminism will take to the streets on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, like every year, next Tuesday, November 25th. Another day in which women in different cities of Spain will demand an end to sexist violence and inequality. So far this year, 38 women have been killed by their partner or ex-partner; and there are 1,333, since in 2003, when registration began, his murder left 289 minors orphaned. Furthermore, 87 women have been victims of social, sexual, indirect or familial femicides since January 2022, the year this figure began to be collected; and 65 minors have been murdered by indirect sexist violence since data existed, 12 years ago. And all this is only the most extreme violence, but every day, in Spain as throughout the world, thousands of women suffer different types of violence.

In contrast there is this date, recognized on a global scale, and set in honor of the Mirabal sisters, who on November 25, 1960 were tortured and murdered by the dictatorship of General Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. Known as Las Mariposas – their code name in the resistance – Patricia, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal faced one of Latin America’s longest-running and most repressive regimes in the 1950s.

They defended their principles against Rafael Trujillo’s repression and their bodies were found in a car at the bottom of a ravine, which the dictatorship called an accident. They are recognized as national heroines in their homeland and around the world. As a result of its history, in 1999, the UN established 25N as a date to remember the structural and systematic violence against women which has increasingly faced a breakdown in the consensus that seemed to have been achieved in recent years.

In a recent survey by the 40dB institute, only 35% of men under 29 in Spain responded “very” or “quite a bit” to the statement “there is too much machismo in society”, compared to 82% of women. And the younger they are, the more this perception gap widens, which is more uniform among those over 60.

For this reason feminists will mobilize in several countries. And even for many of them this will be another year in which they will do it in different gears. In Spain this will be the fourth year in which there will be two different calls in some cities such as Madrid. Equality Minister Ana Redondo said she would attend both protests. They will also be divided into places like Mallorca or Seville. In principle, these differences arose around the elaboration of the trans law, by the feminist sector opposed to inclusion in the so-called agenda. queer ―that of minority groups― in general feminism, and from the positions regarding prostitution between the abolitionist part of the movement and the regulatory one.

According to the State Federation of Feminist Organizations, the appeals of this 25N are different, distributed on different days and will be as follows:
