A stabbing brawl left five people with minor injuries Sunday afternoon among inmates at a Nantes prison, we learned from a reliable source.
Firefighters intervened “to a fight with sharp weapons” at the Nantes pre-prison detention center, with five inmates involved, including four lightly injured people who were transported to Nantes University Hospital, the Loire-Atlantique fire and rescue service (SDIS) said.
The interregional prison services directorate confirmed to AFP that the fight had left five people with minor injuries, but at this stage they could not specify the context or nature of the weapons used.
“It’s very complicated right now”
The “fight between inmates” occurred in the training yard of the pre-prison detention center, shortly after 3 p.m., according to William Cozic, a delegate of the Force Ouvrière Justice union at the Nantes prison. The situation remained “very tense” at the end of the afternoon, with the outing having to be canceled following the violence, Mr. Cozic.

“I don’t know what kind of knife was used today (Sunday) but fights between inmates are becoming more frequent, and we often encounter ceramic knives” that don’t trigger metal detectors, in addition to homemade knives, the union official explained.
“Congestion also occurs, with deliveries via drone and inspections almost every day. Currently the situation is very complicated and overpopulation does not help,” he stressed. According to him, this overcrowding reached a “new level” this week at the Nantes pre-trial detention center: “between the arrivals section, the disciplinary section and the men’s building, there are 860 inmates in 420 places”.
