Bad Segeberg (Schleswig-Holstein) – Firefighters do everything they can to save the lives of others – often risking their own safety in the process. Something similar happened to Wahlstedt’s colleagues: On their way home from a mission, they had an accident when their fire engine left the road in heavy rain and hit an oak tree. Nine emergency services were injured, two of them seriously.
The momentous event occurred at 21:24 Accident on Segeberger Straße between Groß Rönnau and Hamdorf: The vehicle left the country road with a slight bend to the right and hit a large oak tree.
The driver’s cabin was completely destroyed
Tragic accident after fire
“It happened on the way back from another operation in Bad Segeberg,” explained Alexander Benecke-Blüher from the Bad Segeberg district fire brigade association. The roof structure of a single-family home caught fire.
Which was especially stressful: of all people, his own comrades had to rush to the rescue. More came later Firefighter added. In total there were around 80 emergency services on site, and the Technical Assistance Agency was also involved.
The passenger and driver were rescued from the wreckage by fellow firefighters
Our own comrades had to rescue the injured
Two firefighters – the driver and a passenger – were trapped in their vehicle and, according to information from BILD, were seriously injured. Several emergency doctors and rescue services rushed to the accident site. Rescue helicopters were alerted but were unable to land due to strong winds and heavy rain.
The mission was a mental test for the helpers: they had to free their own comrades from the destroyed vehicles. “Comrades are affected, this is always difficult,” said Benecke-Blüher.
Emergency psychosocial care currently cares for firefighters involved in dramatic rescues. Segeberger Strasse was completely closed until after midnight, according to police. An investigation is currently underway to determine why the fire truck left the road. Police have started an investigation.
