At Werder Bremen, Albert Voß was only number two. However, his commitment to the club was appreciated. Now the goalkeeper has died.

Former professional football player Albert Voß dies. Werder Bremen’s longtime goalkeeper has died at the age of 74. This was announced by the North German side in an official announcement on Monday.

Voß moved from VfB Oldenburg to Bremen in 1975. There he was second behind DFB goalkeeper Dieter Burdenski for six years. His only appearance in the Bundesliga came on 26 November 1977 in a 2–1 defeat at Kaiserslautern. In the 1980/1981 second division season he made eight appearances and contributed directly to promotion.

According to Werder president and chairman of the supervisory board, Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, Voß was considered “one of the best goalkeepers in Northern Germany” in the 1970s, which is why the Hanseatic League signed him. He is “highly regarded” at the club – even as second goalkeeper. In this context, Hess-Grunewald explained: “Dieter Burdenski knew that he was never allowed to rest. That played a decisive role in his development into a national player.”

After promotion in 1981, Voß left Werder and returned to VfB Oldenburg – although coach Otto Rehagel, according to his own statements, would have wanted to keep the goalkeeper. Afterwards, Voß described his departure from Bremen as “not a good decision”. He left VfB Oldenburg after just one year and then ended his career with several lower-class clubs.
