Milan, 18 November (askanews) – “The drama that hit Friuli confirms, once again, the ongoing climate crisis. We cannot continue to ignore what scientists have been repeating for years”. This was expressed by Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, former Minister of the Environment and President of the UniVerde Foundation, organizer of the climate conference that launched the challenge of adapting to climate change in 2007.
“The powerful, self-healing storms that hit the region, triggered by the abnormal heat of the sea – in this case the Adriatic Sea – caused new victims and destruction. A phenomenon that shows how the Mediterranean is becoming too hot and how extreme events are becoming more frequent and destructive.”
Pecoraro Scanio underlines that “thunderstorms are always present, but self-recovering storms, capable of dumping large amounts of water on densely populated and urban areas, constitute a real emergency that can no longer be minimized”.
“The government – he continued – cannot continue to be restrained by climate change deniers. We need to take action on two fronts: reducing CO2 emissions and, at the same time, finally implementing a serious plan to adapt to climate change, as I proposed in 2007 at the National Climate Conference.”
We need a national commissioner structure for the climate emergency, a stable and competent government that works every day to prevent deaths, mitigate damage and protect communities. This must be a priority for a government that truly wants to respect its role, and the same applies to Parliament.”
