Giorgia Meloni, or the Italian economic miracle… This little musical has established itself in recent months. This has been repeatedly raised, here in France, by those who argue that before the extreme right comes to power, we should perhaps try it and judge based on the available evidence. An argument that, in a period of XXL bazaar around the budget and increasing distrust of politicians, appeals to some voters. It’s true, we’ve never tried it. But relying on Giorgia Meloni’s economic results to make people believe that things are working, that they’re not even bad, that things are going well, is a lie. Because there is no transalpine economic miracle. If the budget deficit can be controlled better than in France, then the debt burden in France will remain larger and growth will be sluggish. In summary, Meloni’s miracle is based primarily on the fact… that the Italian head of government did nothing, or not much, and in any case, did not undertake major reforms. His talent is knowing how to capitalize on the reforms undertaken by his predecessors (including Mario Draghi), and, an interesting paradox, from Europe’s enormous financial fortunes. Without Europe, Italy would be in its current recession. This Europe was hated by the far right and therefore by Giorgia Meloni… before she took responsibility. Therefore, the so-called Italian right-wing economic miracle is actually based on a denial of the ideological basis of the extreme right-wing group. And not one bit. Let’s remember briefly, while the RN is proud of France for standing up for the working class, that social issues are by no means Giorgia Meloni’s top priority. In short, the only “talent” the head of the Italian government possesses undoubtedly has more to do with political skills. A form of pragmatism that is far removed from any “miracle” that could validate the orientations worth testing here.
