Giorgio Cini Foundation, the concession period has been extended to 50 years

The State Property Agency, after receiving an opinion from the Ministry of Culture, signed a deed with the Giorgio Cini Onlus Foundation extending the concession period for part of San Giorgio Maggiore Island to 50 years.

Mission

The document – said the Agency – “will guarantee the Foundation to continue its mission of caring for, protecting and cherishing this extraordinary state asset until 2064, through restoration, maintenance and spatial planning, ensuring the continuity of the center of cultural excellence in Venice”. The deed was signed by the director of the State Property Agency, Alessandra dal Verme and the president of the Foundation, Gianfelice Rocca.

With this operation – in line with what has been achieved in the Royal Gardens of Venice – the State Property Agency implemented a rule (article 14, paragraph 2 bis, Presidential Decree 296/2005) that allows public goods concessions to be extended for up to 50 years to non-profit bodies, foundations and associations operating in the cultural, environmental, research and social sectors. A good public-private partnership model that guarantees the value of national heritage and its collective use.

Venice, San Giorgio Island: Giorgio Cini Foundation

Foundation

Founded in 1951 by Vittorio Cini in memory of his son Giorgio, the Foundation promotes dialogue between different cultures, humanistic and scientific research through an interdisciplinary approach.

Over the years, it has restored life and splendor to the island’s monumental complex of San Giorgio Maggiore – designed, among others, by Palladio and Longhena – once degraded by military use for more than a century. For seventy years, the Foundation has represented an international cultural and research laboratory, a meeting point between the most authoritative figures in the artistic, scientific and academic worlds, contributing to making the island a place of dialogue and innovation open to the city and the world.
