Grapes, almonds, bratwurst: an early start: some markets attract visitors even before Advent

In Bayreuth, mulled wine has long been served in the “Winter Village”, while construction work began elsewhere – in Bavaria Christmas market season is approaching.

“Winter Village” opened in October, and this early start traditionally attracts national attention. According to the organizers, the fact that so far the weather has not been too cold, and sometimes even very cool, has Bayreuth Interest in wine, punch and bratwurst is not waning.

“It’s a misconception that it has to be very cold,” says managing director Maximilian Vogel. And especially when it snows, people tend to stay at home. The “ideal” temperature is around seven degrees and the weather is dry and sunny.

The world famous Nuremberg Christmas Market usually starts on the Friday before the first day of Christmas Arrival with the prologue of the Christ child – this year it is November 28th. Many visitors from home and abroad visit the city to stall at the main market until Christmas.

German-American Christmas Market in Eging

German-American Christmas markets in Lower Bavaria also start long before Advent. At Pullman City, an amusement park in Eging near Passau, the Christmas market opened last Friday with a light and fire show, live music, Wild West shows, children’s shows, singing Santa Claus and giant stuffed animals.

Rothenburg Reiterlesmarkt

The Reiterlesmarkt in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is nationally known – starting on November 21st. Its popularity is mainly due to its setting: amid the festively decorated medieval streets of the small town of the Ansbach district, you can drink wine, eat bratwurst or look for suitable gifts at artisan stands.

The Christmas market opens with the entrance of the Rothenburg “Reiterle”: a mythical figure from pre-Christian times greets visitors.

Lindau Christmas port

From the end of November you can also enjoy the romantic atmosphere on the southwestern edge of Bavaria Christmas Soak up the mood: Lindau’s Christmas Harbor stretches along the promenade of Lake Constance. In the center of the festival site is the Mangturm, a 20 meter high former lighthouse. There are regular hand puppet shows for children.

From Friday to Sunday, visitors can take the Advent boat to the Austrian town of Bregenz which neighbors Lindau on the other shore of Lake Constance.

Christmas market at Marienplatz Munich

The Christmas market in the state capital is one of the largest in Bavaria. According to the city of Munich, the showman offers food, drinks, crafts and more at 138 stands. It has taken place at Marienplatz since 1972.

Live music is played on the balcony of the town hall, and those interested are regularly invited to sing carols together under the Christmas tree in front of St. Peter’s Church. In front of the church, whose tower is called “Old Peter” by the people of Munich, there is the “Kripperlmarkt”, where Christmas figurines and figurines are sold. It is considered the largest in Germany. The Munich Christmas Market takes place from November 24 to December 24. Next year will start earlier; the market will be extended by two days following the city council’s decision.
